The Official Newsletter of Camp Moshava (West Coast)
Fun, wild, crazy, and Bad Boys. No not the summer Olympics, but Camp Moshava for 2,3,4 boys. From the opening moments the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade boys were hot on the scenes. At the beginning there was the ruach out of this world. Coping with an ant attack in the bunk, they pushed ahead. They excelled in sports, Mike, and the Shiur. Also worth mentioning was the stellar performance of our tribe. Also for some reason they have connection to that Yaacov guy.
Rosh Eidah BetHow's it going everybody? We're Roshei Ediot Michael Strapp and Rivka Katz.
We just got back from a wonderful overnight and we want to thank everyone for making it so much fun. One thing we want you all to remember from the overnight is the cheers that we screemed on the bus ride back to camp. Let's rock the world this shabbat with our special Eidah Bet Ruach.
On a sadder note, we want to express our sincere condolences for plucy duck, who passed away at 9:53 am in Daniel Wintner's arms.
We all know how that Machal made a radiant effort to scare us. N-I-C-E T-R-Y
We want to say Shabbat Shalom to everyone and remember to drink a lot of water. Bye bye- We So BAD
Eidah Bet SongWe're Eidah Bet
We are so cool.
Everyone knows we are not fools
We're awsome, were fun, we're really neat.
We're gonna clap to the Eidah Bet beat.

On the first day of camp, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th grade girls decided on their bunk name. As everybody knows, we dubbed ourselves as the PWW's. Yet only the exclusive members of our bunk knew exactly what PWW stood for. On Tuesday night we revealed to the world, (all right, it was just the Machaneh) the true nature of our "tribe." We Pee-Wee Whiners brought the house to their flet w/ our Jackson Five boogying and "Tough girl" cheer. But a moment after we had finally revealed the name of out tribe, Yaakov Avinu came and renamed us Shevet Binyamin. Now we call ourselves the Foxie Ladies. Can anyone figure out the connection between Shevet Binyamin and our new name?
So why are we the Foxy Ladies so special, you ask? Well, we whiners have an agenda of our own. Everyday after dinner we go to a designated spot and discuss the laws of lashon harah. We act out scenes in which girls have discussions and then we decide weather what we said is Lashon Harah or not. Maany important issues are discussed. The result is that less lashon harah is spoken in the bunk.
As for what we do during the day, all of us agree that swim and dance are our favorite activities. All in all, our first week in camp was so much fun that we can't wait for the next week to begin! Have a great Shabbat!
All Ducks go to heavenAs soon as I heard I came running out of breath, I reached the shore of the lake. I stood there looking at the helpless, dying, duck. The grimace on my face increased as I understood the pain the creature was in. It moved around in the water struggling with the hook stuck in his throat. The madrichim stepped in the water trying to save the miserable duck. My heart sank as I thought about the situation. Then came nurse Mike, equiptment and all. The duck in Daniel Wintner's arm gasped as it strugled to take its last and final breath. As the duck inhaled for one last time and collapsed to heaven arise again.
From the 6th Grade GirlsIt has been a very exciting week here at Camp Moshava. Already, the 6th grade girls have been on a hike led by Rivka Katz, made Shabbat candle stick holders in art class, been on a campout, and scored a perfect 10 on the neatness of our bunk.
We have learned to cooperate with each other, and accept each others opinions. We have also learned to share and ask for things.
Our bunk would like to thank Brenda Walt and the rest of the cooks for cooking and serving delicious food all week long. We could not have survived the week if it wasn't for you. We would also like to thank our two wonderful madrichot Racheli and Karen. Especially Racheli for wearing a toilet seat on her head. We are looking foward to the next two weeks of fun, games and excitement.
PoemThrough the bug filled brush they brave night,
Counting bites along the way.
Scurrying along their path of light,
Waiting to sing what they cannot say.
Glossy-eyed they crowd around the fire,
Dreaming creatures yet to sound.
Emotions flutter instead of dire,
To their hearts new friends are bound.
Control is replaced by song,
The air is clear of fright.
Time to sleep with nothing wrong-
No one's tired, we shmooz all night.
Another day gone.
Another night sung
Moshava is still here
Now, and next year.
KA, Eidah Aleph
Our Parasha begins with:
"Behold I place in front of you today the blessing and the curse. The blessing - that you will keep and observe the commandments of Hashem your G-d which I command you this day" What is this beracha about which Hashem speaks? It seems that Hashem is telling us that the very keeping and observing the Torah is itself the beracha we will receive. The Torah is something wonderful that we should only want more of. Just as we would want only more and more of G-d's other blessings, how much the more should we yearn for more Torah, more opportunities to perform mitzvot, the greatest gift from Hashem. In machane we have an opportunity to enjoy this blessing, and to develop a thirst for this positive, enjoyable fun experience of Torah and Mitzvot. This is particularly true in relation to the central mitzvot of Tefilla and Talmud Torah. I have been to many camps and I must say that Tefilla here at Machane Moshava is a true Kiddush Hashem! It is an inspiration to participate in the tefillot of both Eidah Aleph and Eidah Bet. Such beautiful singing! Such a spirit of Kavanah! People are sensitive to each other and don't disturb by talking (well, at least most of the time!). Mitpalelim take their time during the Amidah-Shemoneh Esreh and don't feel rushed! Rabbi Yehudah Halevi wrote in his Kuzari that Tefilla is the choice part of the day, that activity to which people look forward to most. Here at our machane a lot of effort has been invested in making tefilla beautiful, meaningful and enjoyable, and these efforts have been made by you, our chanichim and tzevet! Therefore the achievements in this area are to your credit. Yeyasher Kochachem! I have also noticed such an eagerness in the area of learning Torah. Chanichim drop in to the Bet Medrash asking to learn with the participants in our new Bet Medrash program. I have been approached several times not only with questions about Torah, but with sincere, persistent and repeated requests from kids to learn extra with them, or to organize extra learning for groups of chanichim and tzevet. This positive loving attitude towards Torah and Tefilla augurs well for our machane and its future as a educational center for transmitting Torah VaAvodah values. It is our challenge to continue to strengthen the level of Ruchaniyut spirituality at our machane, and with the combined efforts of all as well as the help of Hashem, I am confident that we will succeed. Shabbat Shalom!
Once there was a lake called Lake Fishy. Of course there were a lot of fish. One day a fox came to the fish and said that he would be willing to take the fish out of the water to save them from the fisherman. The fish wouldn't go. The fox asked why they wouldn't go. The fish replied "If we go out of the water we will surely die but if we stay, there's a chance that the fisherman will not catch us." The moral of this story is that the fish are like the Jewish people, and the water is like Torah. If the Jewish people learn Torah they still have a complete soul. The ground is like bad deeds, if you do them all the time you are just like a dead person.
The Biography of Leon Covitz
Leon Covitz was born in Scotland on a farm. When he was a little child he began his involvement in Bnei Akiva. He also fell in love with cows at an early age. Ten years ago Leon moved to Israel and lived on Kibbutz Ma'ale Gilboa. When Leon got there he really liked a cow named Perach. A few years later Perach gave birth to a cow named Vacuum. Leon really fell in love with Vacuum. It was love at first site. A few years later Leon became the Shaliach at Silver Springs for the next two years. He also worked at Moshava in I.O. during that time. At the end of those two years he went back to Israel. As soon as he came back to Israel, he became the Rosh Mach Hach for bus 2 in 1994. During Mach Hach he was really obsessed with Vacuum. She was the only thing on his mind. One day on Mach Hach he was on the bus and passed by a bunch of cows; he told the entire bus that "these are the prettiest girls in the world." After Mach Hach Leon stayed on Kibbutz Ma'ale Gilboa for the next year. During one day in November 1994 Vacuum Bat Perach died. She actually got slaughtered without Leon's permission. From that day on Leon became very sad. He is still in mourning now. At the end of June 1995, Leon came back to America. He worked at I.O. that summer. At the end of that summer he became the Shaliach Chinuchi of Bnei Akiva of North America for the year. He came to Los Angeles on a few occasions including the Shabbaton Madrichim and Mosh Choref. Now Leon is here at Moshava in Yucaipa. A little while after Moshava ends Leon will be returning to Israel and living at Kibbutz Ma'alei Gilboa for good.
SportsLast Monday night at Moshava Stadium the first match began. In on corner was Yitzchak "Rocky" Carmeli weighing .... pounds from the mean streets of Israel. In the other corner was Alex "bone crusher" Zaghi weighing 150 pounds from the west coast. Carmeli gave a mean right towards Zaghi, but Zaghi blocked it with his face. The fight was broken up when a bunch of wild fish held by children doing the Mackarena came by.
Shabbos WalksLast week we took a look and saw that some very nice people don't have Shabbos walks, but some don't have them in order to make sure that you will get a Shabbos walk. Please contact the Shabbos walk patrol (the sixth grade boys a.k.a. the match makers.)
Nikayon
Announcing the 2nd,3rd,4th, and 5th grade boys new record! During nikayon our bunk got a .5 out of 10 for having the messiest bunk possible. The bunk looked like it went through a hurricane. The next day we cleaned it and it is now one of the nicest bunks in the entire camp. We missed an entire peula in order to clean our bunk. After the bunk was cleaned we scored a ten out of ten on the nikayon chart. During dinner that night that we got a ten on nikayon our madrich Alex Zaghi got to wear the toilet seat on his head.
A Message From Ka, Your Rosh Eidah (Aleph):Two weeks down, still no sign of Color War. Castle Amusement Park, Raspberry Picking and a couple of Shabbatot later, still no sign of Color War. How will Stephanie bring in this long awaited tradition? Many rumors have been flooding the camp: Will Mike dress up as a bear and scare everyone or perhaps we'll surprise everyone by taking them to a special place in Redlands? Whatever it is, whenever it comes and whichever team you end up on, "Go go, fight fight, gee I hope I look alright.. I even got a manicure..."
For your enjoyment, I have listed below some of the ideas we are thinking about for the teams of Color War:
Doc Martins v. Adidas
Ice v. Fire Land v. Sea
Ashkenazim v. Sefardim
Hillel v. Yavneh
City v. Valley
Kilts v. Skirts
Paper v. Plastic
Good Luck -TzviKA
Letters:Dear Machane Moshava,
I just would like to wish you a, Shabbat Shalom. I hope you have a great Shabbat, and don't forget Camp Moshava is the best.
What a week! First we received an award from Mike for the most sick calls. Boy did we deserve it. Next we earned a ten in nikayon again and even though we didn't win the toilet seat award and we are still proud of it. The trip to Castle Amusement Park was awesome. The rides were fun except for a little nauseating. We felt as though we kept going in circles. All in all we are having a great time in camp. Shabbat Shalom everyone.
7&8th Grade BoysOn behalf of the whole 7th and 8th grade boys, I would like to say good-bye to all the Kaufler girls and to Erez Nissel on their departure from Camp Moshava. We all hope that you have enjoyed your stay here. We will miss you all. Starting Monday, there was an epidemic around the camp concerning food poisoning. The culprit (the food) is still unknown, yet many suspects are under the knife for questioning. While the desserts this summer have been quite scrumptious, please watch the "killer-cookie," it has been known to strike ruthlessly. On that note please enjoy your Friday-night dinner, and have a good Shabbat.
PWW At Play
We were getting ready to go to the theme park. We were on the bus for a half hour. We sang songs on the bus. When we got there we went on the log ride. It was very fun. We got wet as we slid down the log ride. We also went on scary rides. We went on two roller coasters, swings, boats, and we went on the ship my stomach flied away from me. Tzvika was so scared, I closed my eyes every time we went up Alison and I were at the way end. The spider ride was cool. Alana and I went together on the bumper cars. We had a very good time. We were all very thirsty so we drank a lot.
PoemMachal this week was such a blast We did so much, it went so fast.
We hiked up a hill and had mud fights.
We had Tzofiut and made some tights.
We went and gave eidah bet a scare & made Daniel Kramer dress up like a bear.
We learned some CPR with nurse mike & making brownies and cake is what we do like.
The week ended with a Bing Badda Bang.
The Hidden Rosh MoshShe's funny hard working and enthusiastic. One look behind the scenes, however, reveals a different person. Stephanie Ives is an avid collector of spider legs. She has always been fascinated by the mysteries of nature. One thing in particular that has amazed Stephanie are rocks of all sizes and shapes. Hence, her famous expression, "you rock the world". Perhaps the most interesting thing about Stephanie is what happens to her after 1:00 am. Yes, you guessed it; She becomes a baby bear (dove). Just kidding. Stephanie does not actually become a bear she becomes an obsessive bear lover. If you ever spot her late at night ask her just how much she loves her bears. On a more serious note, the staff would like to thank Stephanie for the endless hours.
From Mike The NurseSo we all made it through week number two, all of us fairly healthy except for a few bunks, bruises and "tummy troubles." Here are a few tips to help you: For headaches, try drinking enough H2O. You SHOULD be drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water everyday. For those pesky muscle cramps-try doing stretches before and after exercises. For back muscle pain-let hot shower water (or as hot as you are comfortable with) run on those poor muscles, and lets be very careful about horse play, (right Abie & Alex) until next week. Stay cool.
Dvar TorahIn our parasha we find the prohibition on cheating. We are told that we should not take away from someone what is rightfully theirs, because they earned it, because they studied for it (and you didn't), because they paid for it, whatever.
"But you shall have a perfect and just weighing scale, a perfect and just measure you shall have. Then your days will be lengthened in the land which Hashem your G-d gives you. For G-d detests and considers an abomination anyone who acts unjustly"(Devarim 25:15-16).
G-d expects us to be honest with ourselves and with others- moreover, He demands it!! He wants us to be very careful not to cheat ourselves or others.
Hashem gave each of us a neshama tehorah, a pure soul. This neshama needs nourishment, attention. We have the ability to cheat our neshama, denying her what she deserves, or we can give our neshama her due, by davening with all our heart, by learning Torah, by doing chesed, by trying to connect with Hashem. We must give our neshamot as much attention as we do to our bodies.
The month of Elul has begun. In these days of cheshbon nefesh, of introspection and determination to take on new spiritual challenges, let's think of things we can do to pay more attention to our neshama and its needs.
Shabbat Shalom!
More Precious Than Gold(steins)As ELAL flight 002 takes off from Los Angeles International carrying about six or so Goldsteins, the vibrant LA. Zionist community will feel sudden reprecussions hitting them like a ton of bricks. About three years ago Bnei Akiva in Los Angeles was stuck in a stalemate, neither growing nor diminishing. Then, all of a sudden a seemingly simple family named "The Goldsteins" appeared like a bat out of hell ready to resurrect Bnei Akiva in the West Coast. Yehuda and Dorit single handedly turned the "lishka" into a warm and friendly office. They made Camp Moshava the Jewish Orthodox sleepaway camp in California. The Goldsteins put the "camp" in Moshava. Another great accomplishment was the Goldsteins work in turning Snif into the most frequently used household word. It was no longer scratch n' sniff, but finally it was Snif. Mach Hach Ba'Aretz was strengthened significantly by Yehuda's astute ability in picking the cream of LA's teenagers, who were to participate on the program. His strong warning to all teenagers on this program was heard around the world. "If you try, you fly." The list goes on with regard to the brilliant work the Goldsteins amassed in their three years in Los Angeles. Since there are no ads in this paper we need to conserve money and therefore the list must continue in our heart and not just on paper.
"The dance may have ended way to soon, but at least we got to dance."
Red Team
1-2-3-4-we want color war 5-6-7-8 we don't want to wait! It's here. Greetings from the red team. By the time you read this the verdict will be in, and you will already know which team has won the best color war ever with the best judges in the world. Which ever team is the winning team is the winning team, we all know that the red team had the most fun:
So sad Mike and Rivka "intended," But they brought color war. So our feelings were mended Red of the Kings-a color so royal To our dear judges we are oh so loyal Our opposing team: The Prophets so blue We beat them in archery and great ruach too We gambled & jousted at our royal ball and rolled out the red carpet to our grand dining hall With Carmello on our side, we won tug of war Soccer would of been ours if we'd made one more score In olimpiada and in swimming we fared very well We won the ugly bride contest (couldn't you tell?) Red was so close in limbo, we burst all of our joints But as of now it's not over; we're still scoring points We'll score really high, thanks to our spirits and jocks. Everyone Knows: RED TEAM REALLY ROCKS!
How To'sHow to Kiss up to Judges: As soon as you feel your body temperature rise, think about how the judges are feeling. Find the sweatiest judge, flash your cutest smile and sweetly beckon them to an ice cold glass of water. Never forget the ever popular line "you're the hottest counselor on campus." That's sure to score us a few points - Tzvika!
How to Steal the Cookie from the Cookie Jar: "We stole the cookie from the cookie jar!" Wanna Know how? Proudly "Walt"z into Brenda's kitchen, as thought you had permission, (you know that face.) Walk into that secret yet delicous pantry. On the left in the pantry you will spot a shiny stack of tin pans. (Prepare to drule) open one up and inside you will find the most delicious, mouth watering, warm, gooey cookies you've ever had. (Been there done that!) Take a couple of hundred, stuff them in your pockets and be off. (Sorry Brenda, we couldn't resist temptations.)
How to Cheer Voiceless: After weeks of camp and days of color war you've finally lost your voice - Mazel Tov- welcome to Moshava! Now the problem still remains how the heavens do we cheer?!? Well, watch and learn. Rochel Kaufman has introduced to us the new form of cheering- body language. 1) Jump 2) Clap 3) Swing. Learn these three steps and your a pro baby.
How to Win Color War:
BE ON THE BLUE TEAM!
P.S. We would like to thank the red team for being great sports. We love you with all of our "RED" heart and we're "BLUE" when your not here.
JOKES!
